Spotlight Chick - Shannon Ming

Tell us about yourself so that we can get to know you better.

My name is Shannon Ming and I am the owner of Shannon Ming Insurance Agency based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I have been an independent insurance agent since 2013 wherein I left the corporate world for good!

I had served as a business banker for several years and loved that I got to work with entrepreneurs. I have always been an entrepreneur at heart and am passionate about helping other entrepreneurs. I started out in insurance as a life and health insurance agent to help business owners deal with the high cost of getting health insurance for themselves, their families, and their employees.

I built a business over a two-year period, but the product changed, and was no longer a great solution, in my opinion. I chose to expand my insurance base and become licensed in Property and Casualty as well as health and life. I worked as a captive agent for a couple of years with the intention of opening an independent agency focusing on business owners and their families when the time was right. Although our agency is new, having officially launched in December of 2018, we are a full-service agency offering business insurance, home, and auto, life, annuities, and health, vision, and dental through our trusted partners.

As an independent agency, with options for most insurance needs, we save businesses and individuals time and money by offering many carriers, so you get the right solution for your situation. When your needs change, you don’t need to look for a new agent, or agency, we simply move you into a better option for you at that time. At Shannon Ming Insurance Agency, we are very passionate about Pets and Vets (Veterinarians too but referring to Veterans here!) My husband served, and we live in a military city, where we see the impact that war has had on our veterans.

Although the details are still forming, we will be donating a portion of profits to the Wounded Warrior Project, and to our local Humane Society to support those passions.

Outside of being an entrepreneur, I love to garden and have a half acre filled with flowers and vegetable. My husband and I spend the entire summer outside. Very often running out to protect our precious plants for the hail we get here several times a year. I also rescue pets and currently have two dogs who are 8 years old and love to hike with me. I like singing and dancing, and I love to laugh…lots of times at myself! We are a blended family with four kids, three grandkids, and one more grand child two weeks away. My husband and I have been married for 13 years.

What inspired you to do what you do professionally?

I did not grow up always knowing that I wanted to be an insurance agent. I have always tended to be someone that liked to be involved with and come up with ideas where there was a need for a better way. As a business banker when the healthcare landscape was changing dramatically, affecting the business owners, doctors, and families I was serving, I quit the corporate world to work as an independent agent for an independent health insurance agency offering solutions outside of the marketplace. When that product offering changed, I expanded to help business owners get the right insurance at the right price. I wanted to be able to put my clients first, not just sell the offerings of a single company that may not be the right fit, so I knew I would own an independent agency someday and here we are!

Tell us a story of how you made a difference in someone’s life.

On a weekly, if not daily basis, I help people review their insurance profile to make sure they don’t have any gaps, and that they are properly insured. People work hard for their businesses, their homes, autos, boats, etc., and I truly enjoy helping them feel secure about that and know they are getting the right coverage at the right price.

One of my favorite corporate positions was at a small propriety college wherein I was the career services director. I helped graduates get their first jobs and I fought for them to get what they were worth. I had many students thank me for helping them believe in themselves and helping them get great jobs with higher starting salaries.

My first career was as a counselor for at risk teens. I ran into one of my “teens” years later who introduced me to his wife and kids and told me I was a big reason he turned his life around. I will always cherish that. Shannon Ming insurance Agency is dedicated to giving back to the community. We started a non-profit initiative wherein $5 goes into a non-profit contribution account and back to the community, whether the client chooses us or not. We hope they gain valuable information from their consultative insurance review.

What have you gained personally from being a member of Chicks Connect?

I met Kelly Chisholm about a year ago at a women’s chamber event and I was lucky enough to sit next to her. I was instantly drawn to her warmth and professionalism. She started our Colorado Chicks connect chapter here in Colorado Springs. She had gathered 7 other women for the first meeting. I only knew Kelly but we all had an instant connection and a great synergy. I am in other networking groups but in Chicks connect, we have a small mastermind group and can help each other with different challenges and in celebrating each other’s accomplishments.

What have you gained professionally from being a member of Chicks Connect?

When I first started with our Chicks Connect group, I was struggling with financial challenges in my insurance business after having a very bad experience, wherein I “lost” a lot of money, with a former business partner. I was forced to cut ties with her and ended up with an office and agency that I now carried myself. I was truly thinking of giving it up and would have if it was not for the group’s understanding and encouragement. I am so grateful for the advice and support of the group we have.

Any words of wisdom for other Chicks?

After getting hurt from the business partnership I had, from a person who I would have called my best friend prior to the experience, it was hard for me to trust, or to share personal or even professional information with anyone. It took a while for me to start to want to form relationships again but I am glad I joined the CHICKS Connect because there are a lot of wonderful women out there and I am glad to have met a lot of you and to be in the group I am in. My advice would be not to cut yourself off from people because you got burned. There are so many wonderful, dynamic women out there.
