Spotlight Chick - Michele Duncan King

Tell us about yourself so that we can get to know you better.

Hi, I’m Michele. In addition to facilitating a monthly women's support group called "A Soft Place to Land" and hosting workshops through Essential Being Coaching, I am also a massage therapist, Reiki Master, and yoga instructor at Sea Spell Massage located in beautiful Cannon Beach, Oregon. It is my mission to be a dynamic co-creator with you, and I love to inspire and connect with others through the heart. I am a wife, mother, daughter, sister, auntie, and friend! In my free time, I enjoy traveling with my husband Matt, gardening and other outdoor activities, and tapping into my own creative vitality through crafts and projects.

What inspired you to do what you do professionally?

I spent the first 20 years of my working life in the law field. I put in long hours and it left me feeling unfulfilled and physically and emotionally depleted. My kids were getting older and starting to leave the nest when my mother was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). I was one of her care providers for over two years. After she passed away, I had a different perspective on life and wanted to do something where I could be in service to others and use my natural gifts. So in 2008, I enrolled in massage school and later started my own practice. I was able to travel all over the world for training and teaching. In 2014 while living in Colorado, I was voted "Best of the Best Massage Company" in the Denver south metro area. That was a huge accomplishment and one I am still proud of today. I later attended school at an ashram to become a yoga instructor, not to teach but in order for me to give people stretches after they left the massage table. I am also a Reiki Master. At this juncture, however, I am consciously transitioning away from my bodywork practice. This year (2019), I started coursework to become a Celebrant in ceremonies across the life cycle, and next year (2020) I have committed to training as an end-of-life doula.

Tell us a story of how you made a difference in someone’s life.

I have helped hundreds of people in my bodywork practice over the past decade, and I am a supporter of women on their path to personal development and professional growth. I only hope to be a contribution to others’ healing and sense of wholeness. Ram Dass has said: "We’re all just walking each other home." I have never had a more clear and direct understanding of purpose as I do now entering my "final encore career" in end-of-life support. I have seen the chaos in loss and the gap created between illness and dying. I am called by something bigger than me to offer services in Swedish Death Cleaning, Transition Ceremonies, Advanced Health Care Directives, Mobile Notary Services, Body Disposition Options, Pre-Funeraling, Guiding Difficult Conversations, and Creating a Care Team. It seems like everything I've done before has prepared me for this important work ahead.

What have you gained personally from being a member of Chicks Connect?

I am fairly introverted, and I’ve gained so many friendships that I would not have otherwise extended myself to. I’ve also learned how to "stretch but not tear" as I am asked to speak at events about my philosophies on life. I love being able to use my own experiences and the Personal Owner’s Manual program I developed in supporting other women find true authenticity and self-acceptance. You may have heard me say before that people will treat you the way you teach them to treat you, but you have to know how you want to be treated first. And that comes from knowing yourself, your stressors and soothers, your habits, your essence, how you express yourself, etc.

What have you gained professionally from being a member of Chicks Connect?

My friend and Sister Chick Ali Davidson and I are launching a new chapter of Chicks Connect in January which we have named City&Sea. We have a "Virtual Coffeehouse" meeting format at 8:30 AM every Tuesday via Zoom (except the first Tuesday of the month) and a luncheon 11:30 AM the first Tuesday of every month in Hillsboro/Beaverton area, location TBD. Working 1:1 with Ali has helped to reveal my own leadership skills and allowed me to use business and organizational skills that I wouldn’t necessarily use in my bodywork practices.

Any words of wisdom for other Chicks?

Share you stars and wishes with your Sister Chicks, bounce things off them and have them bounce off you, go for coffee together, pick up the phone to chat for no particular reason. Chicks rock!
