We are Abbey’s Purple Winged Angels
We are Abbey’s Purple Winged Angels, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to supporting foster youth and foster parents.
Our mission is to provide foster youth with the opportunities to explore and discover who they were born to be, ways to be true to their goals and dreams in order to find purpose and significance as positive contributors to society.
What We Do and How We Do It:
APWA is dedicated to supporting foster youth and foster parents by providing, 1. Strategies that facilitate meaningful connections between foster parents and foster youth that build positive self-images, self-regulation, self-control, and self-confidence; and 2. Workshops that help foster youth explore and discover identity and purpose and ways to use the information to make daily decisions and get the life they dream of. The Program is unique, in that it brings foster parent and foster youth pairs together for 3 days in a setting that uses the best teaching and learning processes to support meaningful connections. The cost for each Foster Pair is 1,500 and includes presentations, workshop materials, access to a follow up program, opportunities for foster youth to become future leaders as APWA mentors, ambassadors, and interns. The Program implements Dr. Kim’s proprietary Positive Youth Guidance System which is based on grounded scientific research that has been tested and proven effective.
Why We Do IT
Children and youth enter foster care because they have been abused, neglected, or abandoned by their parents or guardians. “We must step forward to help children, who through no fault of their own, are at risk of making positive contributions to their own lives, the lives of their future families, and their communities. When they lose, we all lose.”
More than 23,000 children will age out of the US foster care system every year. After reaching the age of 18, 20% of the children who were in foster care will become instantly homeless. Only 1 out of every 2 foster kids who age out of the system will have some form of gainful employment by the age of 24. https://www.nfyi.org/51-useful-aging-out-of-foster-care-statistics-social-race-media/
According to national statistics provided by Arrow, 40 to 50 percent of those children will never complete high school. Sixty-six percent of them will be homeless, go to jail or die within one year of leaving the foster care system at 18.
